Offshore Crew Boats are provided by numerous companies. The Gulf is the heart of the petrochemical sector in the United States. There are over four thousand oil platforms and a number of gas wells too. The area has a large number of industries both on and offshore.

The high concentration of oil rigs and their size means that there are many people and supplies to be transported in the Gulf. The area is home to the tallest oil platform in the world which is over six hundred meters tall. The rigs carry out exploratory drilling and pumping of oil. Many staff are needed to use the machinery. Also there are lots more staff to provide support services such as repairs, maintenance, transportation food and many other services. Therefore the rigs need replacement teams and supplies all the time.

The crew boat industry has changed over time as the oil industry has evolved. Technology has enabled oil companies to explore in more difficult places including deeper water. Now there are oil platforms as far as one hundred miles from the shore so the crew boats need to have the capacity to make those journeys.

Crew boats transport the majority of supplies to the oil platforms. The vessels are normally large with a cabin space for passengers and a long flat section for goods. An example of the capacity ratio of goods to people is a boat for around sixty people can carry approximately ten tones of goods. However the ratios can vary.

Crew boats have changed over time in response to the changing needs of the oil industry. The biggest change has been the engines. Newer boats are usually fitted with a water jet system. These are faster to compensate for the increased distance. The system is also more reliable. Many crew boats are more comfortable also due to the longer distance.

The Gulf of Mexico spans five states in the US and a large area in Mexico. There are many ports along the coast and crew boats can be hired from a number of them. It is possible to hire boats at short notice and the companies understand the need to provide a rapid service.

The safety regulations which the companies much comply with are strict. They all must observe the Federal Laws, Federal Communications Commission and the United States Coast Guard. They have professional crews and stringent maintenance programs. Many of the larger companies keep spare parts for their boats so that they do not spend a lot of time in repair.

The Gulf of Mexico has a large petrochemical industry which has a high demand for transportation services. There are many crew boat companies fulfilling this demand.
