The pace of business moves much more quickly today than ever before, and there are no signs that things will slow down. Getting material and merchandise from one place to another can no longer be a leisurely activity. Instead, customers and clients often operate on the premise that if they wanted it next month, they would have ordered it next month. But the proliferation of carriers has left many in need of a guide for choosing the correct air freight services.

Putting first things first, a company should see what it truly needs. Is air freight limited to outbound orders to customers who have requested rush handling? Or are there inbound shipments as well of stock or raw materials? What sizes are these shipments, both in and out? Are they parcels or cargo containers? Are air freight shipments ever on a pallet? Are international shipments involved?

Once the types of shipments in and out have been analyzed, then a company needs to determine which factors are most important in selecting a courier delivery service. How critical is on time delivery? If it is crucial, then carriers with the best on time record should move to the front of the list. What about ground services, such as getting the shipments to and from the airport? Are those available at no cost or will there be an additional charge? If the company must deliver shipments to the airport, is the required equipment in place?

Does the carrier being considered have the equipment to process the volume of business the company will generate? A small carrier with four planes may not be a wise choice for a company shipping 10,000 packages a day spread over forty states. Does the carrier have mechanics on staff and other support personnel to keep their equipment operational? And should a delay occur in transit, is a safe warehouse available? Finally, does the carrier refuse to carry any particular product that might be in the company\’s inventory?

By answering these questions, a company has compiled its own guide for choosing the correct air freight services. A handful of carriers possess all the qualities, many will have most, and a few will fail to have enough to justify the business.

The giants of the industry usually offer the widest range of services and the best on time rate. However, there are smaller companies who can challenge them in many areas. At the same time, there are also some of the smaller companies who are operating with planes that are both too few in number and too old. This can sometimes lead to late deliveries.

Naturally, cost is of prime importance when choosing a carrier. A company who can offer a carrier a great deal of business can often contract for reduced rates by guaranteeing a minimum amount of business. Other carriers can be used at the same time, but the next contract might not be as favorable if the contract carrier finds out.

Companies who ship mainly smaller parcels might want to utilize supplies furnished by the carrier. Most of the larger carriers will offer shipping boxes and return address labels for no cost, and some require it. The company saves money on shipping supplies, and since the boxes are often faster to pack, may also reduce labor costs.

Carefully analyzing the needs of the company provides the most effective guide for choosing the correct air freight services. Once a list of providers who possess the qualities needed has been compiled, it is simply a matter of negotiating for the best price.
