It doesn’t matter if you have a lot or a little experience in the trucking industry you probably already know the basics on insurance. But if you think that your auto and your trucking insurance policies are the same, you better think twice. Here are a few of the different important coverages for Trucking Insurance.

The most basic part of your policy is referred to as your primary liability. The minimum amount required will vary, depending on your cargo. It ranges from 750k all the way to 5 million.

The primary limits listed above are the bare minimums required by the state. But because accidents can very easily be more expensive than this, many truckers and trucking companies decide to set higher limits. You may decide to do this if you can afford it and you consider your risks high.

It is important as you are purchasing truck insurance to decide the limit of coverage you want on your cargo. The limits mentioned above only cover your liability to damages caused, if you want to insure the contents of your truck you must purchase that insurance. The price of this coverage varies depending on the worth of your cargo and the amount of coverage you desire.

Another section of your insurance will provide comprehensive coverage for your truck and equipment in the case of an accident. This works like comprehensive coverage for cars. It is your decision if you want to get it, but if you have financed your truck; your lender will probably require it.

As you buy insurance, you may want to consider buying through an insurance broker. They differ from regular agents because they are able to shop through a number of different insurers for you to find you the best deal.
