Identifying a sustainable system of packaging would greatly benefit us and the world we live in. Most of the time, our attitude on packaging is to unpack the package, and throw the box in the garbage heap. Usually, these packages are made of cardboards boxes. Or we may reuse it once or twice until it wears out and discarded in the trash. Our landfills get fuller and create environmental problems.

Yearly, 20 percent of families in the US move to another home and utilize cardboard boxes to pack their belongings. Cardboard boxes maybe biodegradable but aren’t sustainable. The garbage collected from cardboard boxes usually is huge. Aside from that, the manufacture of these cardboard boxes results from chopping trees. As we all know, trees clean the toxic air of the earth’s atmosphere of carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that envelops the earth and cause global warming.

To prevent global warming, a much better way to move is to utilize reusable packaging materials. They can be used again and again. Packing Digest has termed this system of reusing plastic packages as an excellent option and a sustainable strategy in the packing industry. It had been also been considered as one of the best practices on sustainable packaging.

This method of utilizing reusable packing materials involves offering reusable plastic packages to clients. They pack their stuff, have it moved, unpack their stuff and return the plastic container to the moving company for another family to use.

Accordingly, Nefab and other packaging companies offering reusable plastic packaging summarize the advantages of reusable plastic containers. A strong sturdy plastic reusable package protects the furniture being moved, or delicate china and other breakables which aren’t possible using cardboard boxes. If you make use of cardboard boxes, it may make you wrap the delicate stuff in plastic bubble wrap, another disposable item wantonly discarded. Instead of wrapping delicate stuff in plastic bubble wrap and thrown when the moving is done, use paper. Paper may be disposable but has a lesser environmental impact than a plastic disposable item.

Additionally, reusable plastic packaging can carry furniture and heavy items. When moving such package, they can fit snugly inside trucks, saves space and protects your possessions.

Also, reusable plastic packaging containers can be fitted to provide grip handles for the safety of the workers. These features make the job safe for the workers and the contents of each reusable plastic package.

Clearly, reusable packaging materials eliminates trash. If you use a reusable and therefore a returnable sturdy plastic packaging, it can last a long time. If compared with a cardboard box, it maybe used twice or thrice and then thrown in the trash. Of course, a plastic reusable package container will wear out over time but until it has been used maybe a hundred times. Then again, it can be recycled to another plastic container. If thrown in the trash, it only occupies a little space as compared to regularly thrown disposable cardboard boxes.

Apparently, the greatest and most critical impact of utilizing reusable packing materials is on the environment. You save a lot of trees when you hire the services of a moving company that utilizes reusable packing materials.

There might be some disadvantages. If you figure out how much cost to initially buy plastic packaging in different sizes, the may be expensive. Or the inadequacy of storage space may be a problem for some companies with limited stacking space. The most significant disadvantage though is the cost of transportation when you have to return those plastic containers. Transportation would consume fuel. However, if your moving company makes use of bio-diesels, this would not be a problem environmentally.

If you analyze the pros and cons of reusable packing materials versus cardboard boxes, the positive still outweigh the negative. If you do move and choose a moving company employing reusable packing materials, you know you’ve done the right thing for the planet.

Super hurricanes, protracted drought and other weird weather conditions occur regularly which our ancestors haven\’t experienced in their lifetime. We all know that this extreme climate change is a result of global warming. Global warming adversely affects the biodiversity of all living things, melts the polar caps and increases the water content of our oceans and streams. So, we see islands disappearing from the face of the earth and the extinction of flora and fauna. The culprit is the burning of fossil fuels that release greenhouse gases. These gases – carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide – snugly encase the earth trapping heat within. We\’ve heard it a long time ago but hadn\’t taken action.

According to Greenhouse Gas Online, in the US and much of the developed world, 30 percent of carbon dioxide emissions are due to transportation. One third of these emissions are from diesel engines – buses, delivery trucks and semi-trailer trucks.

In 1936, when the trucking industry begun its operations shipping agricultural products from farms to cities, diesel fuel emitted fumes of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide, visible as the obnoxious dirty soot. Greenhouse Gas Online says that for the past 100 years there had been a rapid accumulation of man-made greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This started the cycle of global warming. Clearly, transportation takes most of the blame.

The inventor of the prototype diesel initially utilized vegetable oil as fuel for his invention. Rudolf Diesel then knew that the popular fuel would be a refined chemical derived from gasoline. Despite this, he was hopeful that vegetable oil would find its useful place as the main source of fuel for his engines. Bio-diesels gradually became an alternative fuel source in the 1920 and the 30\’s in some European countries.

Obviously, bio-diesel wins a lot of points more than using petrol diesel for the environment and our pockets. Bio-diesels used in trucks utilize vegetable or animal oils. These oils are usually from soy or rapeseed. Or from used restaurant oil and reused for the manufacture of bio-diesels, a nice way of recycling our waste. Additionally, bio-diesel is completely biodegradable and renewable.

In 2000, Wang and Lyons of the University of West Virginia made a study comparing the emissions of trucks that run on bio-diesel and trucks on pure petroleum diesel. The result remarkably proved that trucks on bio-diesels have a much lower particulate matter, lower hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions as compared to the trucks on petrol fuel.

One gallon of gasoline utilized by a diesel engine releases 20 pounds of carbon dioxide. Now, if a trucking company uses 12,000 gallons a year of petrol diesel that would amount to 240,000 pounds of heat-trapping carbon dioxide released in the earth\’s atmosphere. Supposing all trucking companies world wide decide to use bio-diesels, we\’ll expect a much lesser carbon dioxide emission and then slows the process of global warming. Isn\’t that something?

Traveling the highways, trucks on petrol diesel spew out noxious fumes threatening the health of people all around. These fumes contain aromatic carcinogens that increase people\’s risk of developing lung cancer over time. Moreover, bio-diesels reduce the incidence of acid rain since, they don\’t contain any sulfur. And because a truck on bio-diesel moves silently, they are sweet on the ears too.

Some skeptics claim that bio-diesel doesn\’t deliver in terms of mileage. But studies reveal that trucking companies utilizing bio-diesel doesn\’t make them less efficient. There had been no significant increase or decrease in fuel mileage and they deliver food, furniture or people smoothly. Additionally, the natural cleaning property of bio-diesel adds lubricity to the fuel and protects the engines. This gives you minimal costs to maintain.

Realizing their responsibility to create a better earth and the effect on people\’s health, a number of trucking companies use bio-diesels. Serenity Movers is one efficient company whose fleet of trucks runs exclusively on bio-diesels. These trucks cover 55, 000 miles annually delivering furniture.

If all the trucks utilize bio-diesel, the catastrophic scenario that prophets of gloom keep harking on would be averted. Evidently, the process of global warming will drastically decelerate. We might yet be able to save the melting of the polar caps, save some flora and fauna species from extinction and avert disastrous consequences in our planet. As a bonus, we\’ll save our dollars, stop our dependence on oil and pay our farmers more. We\’ll be able to nurture a sustainable, productive and safe world as a legacy for our children.

So, if we want to see a healthier and renewable earth, let\’s patronize trucking services that run on bio-diesels. Maybe, all shipping services may follow suit. It\’s time we take action.
