Truck drivers are trained to watch for vehicles that might enter the “no-zone.” A “no-zone” is an area where a passenger car disappears from the truck driver’s view. There are front, side, rear, backing up, and right turn no-zones. Truck drivers are also responsible for inspecting their vehicles for mechanical items or issues relating to safe operation. Others, such as Driver/Sales workers, are also responsible for sales and customer service . Truck drivers are a constant presence on the Nation’s highways and interstates. Drivers are at a higher risk for fatal crash-related injuries and for serious health disorders. Some research associates the risk of crash-related deaths with job-related fatigue. Truck drivers are likely to engage in several, if not all, of the behaviors every day of their working lives. It’s only a matter of time until the upper extremities become symptomatic.
Truck drivers are generally paid by the miles driven rather than by the hours worked. Thus, since the Federal Government limits the amount of hours a driver can drive for safety reasons, drivers and trucking companies might manipulate their work hours so they can drive more miles and make more money. Opportunities for truck drivers with local carriers will be more competitive than those with long-distance carriers because of the more desirable working conditions of local carriers. Jobs that offer the best conditions and better wages are mostly in demand.
Truck drivers are immersed in a social network, both in the truck stops (fuel stations and customs) and in their places of origin (where family relations prevail). The social universe of the truckstop is not a simply a transitory place: there are rules of conduct, leaderships, social spaces which are symbolic and geographically marked, and a number of persons who maintain diverse relations amongst themselves for a long time.
